They are similar, but not the same. The roundhouse kick for instance is done with the top of the foot in TKD, but the ball of the foot in karate. TKD in the 1960's still used the ball of the foot, but quickly got away from it in favor of the instep for safety reasons. Karate still uses the ball of the foot except when sparring with the hand and foot pads often used. Again it is due to safety rather than function. Korean Round house kicks tend to over reach compared to karate styles. Korean styles use an Axe kick that is not in traditional styles of karate. Crescent kicks are used in some karate styles, but rarely above the waste, while high crescent kicks are often used in TKD.
The side kick used in TKD is what we call a side thrust kick. It strikes with the heel. In most traditional Karate styles there are two kinds of side kicks. There is a side thrust kick with the heel. There is also a side snap kick that strikes using the outside edge of the foot. The side snap kick does not fully extend so as to not lock the knee. Snap kicks are usually faster than thrust kicks, but thrust kicks usually have more power.
There are other similarities and differences but these are a few of the basic ones.
